Reduce Radon and Increase Average Life Span

How Radon Impacts the Community

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that forms from the breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water. Invisible and odorless, radon can seep into buildings through cracks in foundations, utility penetrations, and other openings. Long-term exposure to high levels of radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States after smoking.

In construction zones or renovation projects, disturbing the soil can increase radon release, putting both workers and future occupants at risk. Unaddressed radon issues can also lead to delays in permits, failed inspections, or potential legal exposure if not properly mitigated.

When to Test for Radon

You should test for radon in any of the following scenarios:

  • Before Breaking Ground: Especially in EPA-designated Zone 1 areas (high radon potential).
  • During Foundation Work: Slab-on-grade and basement foundations are particularly vulnerable.
  • When Renovating or Retrofitting: Remodeling can alter air pressure and airflow, increasing radon intrusion.
  • During Real Estate Transactions: Radon testing is increasingly required in residential and commercial property sales.

Regular radon testing is a critical safety step, often mandated by state or local codes for certain building types.
